Official name

The Philippines is officially called the Republic of the Philippines and heralded as the Republika ng Pilipinas in Filipino.

National Flag

The National Flag of Philippines (Filipino: Pambansang Watawat ng Pilipinas) is a horizontal flag bicolor featuring a white equilateral triangle at the hoist and equal bands of royal blue & scarlet.


Manila is the capital city of Philippines. Located on Luzon Island, Manila is spread along the eastern shore of Manila Bay at the mouth of the Pasig River. The city is the economic, political, social, and cultural hub of the country. Spread across an area of 38.55 km² the city was recorded with a population of 1.652 million as per a survey in 2010.


As of July 2014, the population of Philippines was estimated at 100,096,496, which is equivalent to 1.38% of the total population of the world. With a population density of 334 people per Km2, Philippines is ranked 12th in the list of countries by population.

Official Languages

Filipino was declared the national language of the country by the 1987 Constitution. The official languages of Philippines are Filipino and English. Moreover, many regional languages are also recognized as auxiliary official in their respective regions including Aklanon, Cebuano, Bikol, Hiligaynon, Chavacano, Ibanag, Ivatan, Ilocano, Kinaray-a, Kapampangan, Maranao, Maguindanao, Sambal, Pangasinan, Tagalog, Surigaonon, Tausug, Waray, and Yakan. Additionally, Arabic and Spanish are also encouraged on voluntary or optional basis within the country.

Spread between mainland of Asia and Australia between latitude 21°25'N and 4°23'N and longitude 116°E and 127°E, Philippines is located off to the south-east coast of Asia.

Discovery of Philippines

The Spanish expedition in 1521 led by Ferdinand Magellan-a Spanish explored led to the discovery of Philippines. However, parts of the Philippine Islands were known to European before the expedition in 1521.
